PSHE/RSE

PSHE at Hurst Green is designed to support pupils’ personal development, emotional wellbeing and understanding of the wider world, helping them to become confident, respectful and responsible individuals. Using the myHappymind programme as a foundation alongside statutory PSHE and Relationships Education requirements, the curriculum is carefully sequenced to ensure pupils progressively develop knowledge, skills and emotional understanding from EYFS to Year 6.

The curriculum supports pupils in understanding themselves, managing emotions, building positive relationships and developing resilience, while promoting mental wellbeing, inclusion and respect for others. Through PSHE, pupils are encouraged to develop the confidence and skills needed to keep themselves safe, healthy and prepared for life beyond primary school.

Structure & Sequencing

The PSHE curriculum is structured progressively so that pupils revisit and build upon key themes and concepts over time. Through the myHappymind programme, pupils develop understanding across areas such as self-esteem, emotional regulation, relationships, resilience and healthy lifestyles in an age-appropriate and carefully sequenced way.

Lessons combine discussion, reflection and practical strategies to help pupils apply learning to real-life situations. Pupils gradually develop increasing independence in recognising emotions, managing challenges, communicating effectively and making positive choices. The curriculum also supports pupils in developing understanding of diversity, relationships, online safety and the importance of physical and mental wellbeing.

Personal Development & Wellbeing

At Hurst Green, PSHE and wellbeing extend beyond discrete lessons and form an important part of the wider school culture. The myHappymind approach supports a shared language around emotions, mental health and positive relationships across the school community, helping pupils to develop self-awareness, empathy and confidence.

Pupils are encouraged to reflect on their own experiences, express opinions respectfully and develop strategies to support their wellbeing and resilience. The curriculum promotes positive attitudes towards learning, healthy relationships and responsible decision-making while supporting pupils to understand and celebrate difference within the school and wider community.

Enrichment & Whole-School Culture

PSHE is further enhanced through assemblies, themed events, wellbeing activities and wider opportunities which reinforce key messages around mental health, relationships, safety and personal development. The curriculum supports the school’s wider values and ethos, helping pupils to feel safe, supported and valued as part of the Hurst Green community.

Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)

Relationships and Sex Education at Hurst Green is taught as part of our wider PSHE curriculum and supports pupils in developing the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to build positive relationships, stay safe and understand changes as they grow and develop.

The curriculum is delivered in an age-appropriate and carefully sequenced way in line with statutory guidance. Pupils learn about friendships, families, respect, online relationships, personal safety, physical and mental wellbeing and the importance of healthy relationships. In upper Key Stage 2, pupils are also taught about puberty and human development in a sensitive and supportive manner.

Our approach to RSE reflects the values and ethos of the school and aims to create a safe environment where pupils feel respected, supported and able to ask questions appropriately. Parents and carers are informed about the curriculum and are encouraged to work in partnership with the school to support pupils’ understanding and wellbeing.
